Bioplastics & Beeswax: Two Eco-Science Sundays Wrap Up Our Spring Season

in News by Karen Hessel

This May and June, we wrapped up our spring programming with two dynamic and hands-on environmental science classes led by guest instructor Stephen Soltish from the Cornell Cooperative Extension/4-H program. Despite the intense heat (over 100°F!), the learning didn’t stop—we simply shifted our classes from the greenhouse to our air-conditioned lobby, and the results were fantastic!

June 22: Bioplastics – Exploring Eco-Friendly Materials

In the Bioplastics workshop, students of all ages explored how sustainable materials derived from natural sources, like corn, can be used to create biodegradable plastic. The session combined science, sustainability, and creativity in one immersive lesson.

Participants measured and mixed ingredients, heated their mixtures using a microwave, and chose from an array of fun molds (leaves, flowers, cars, and robots) to form their personalized bioplastic ornaments. For an added creative touch, color dyes were available, allowing each student to customize their piece. It was a colorful, educational, and memorable afternoon.

June 29: Bees' Knees II – Discovering the Power of Beeswax

The following Sunday, we hosted Bees’ Knees II, diving into the incredible properties of beeswax and its real-world uses. After learning how beeswax supports hive health, the students applied their knowledge by creating reusable beeswax food wraps—an eco-friendly alternative to single-use plastic wrap.

Using both a microwave and toaster oven, students (ranging in age from 3 years old to college students!) carefully measured and melted beeswax to coat fabric squares. With support from parents for our youngest participants, everyone got hands-on experience in sustainable living. Many parents even joined in and made their own wraps!

A Shared Learning Experience

Both sessions were well received, with many parents choosing to stay and participate alongside their children. The science-driven format allowed students to build practical skills while learning about the environmental impact of plastic waste and how nature offers better alternatives.

What’s Next?

These two wonderful events conclude our May/June programming. But we’re not done yet! This summer, we’ll be launching “Drop-In Fridays”—informal, educational, and fun sessions designed to keep the learning going all summer long.
